VA State Colleges

Along with deep U.S. historical roots, Virginia has a variety of state colleges. State-funded public colleges in Virginia offer degree programs in education, business, engineering, technology, and many other areas. Students can attend college in cities, historic towns or rural communities in Virginia.
  1. Norfolk State University

    • Founded in 1935, Norfolk State University became one of Virginia's historically black universities. Located in the city of Norfolk, this university provides an affordable quality education. The student body of this state-funded school is culturally and ethnically diverse. Students can earn a degree from the college of liberal arts, school of business, school of education, or the college of science, engineering and technology. Norfolk State University offers 30 bachelor's degree programs, two associate degree programs, 16 master's degree programs and three doctoral degree programs.

    University of Virginia

    • Located in the city of Charlottesville, the University of Virginia holds over a century of the state's rich history, going all the way back to the Civil War. Today, this university still thrives as a leading school of the 21st century. U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Virginia the No. 2 best public university in 2006.

    Virginia Tech

    • Virginia Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1872 and now has the largest full-time student population in the state, according to the school's official Web site. Located in the city of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech offers 65 bachelor's degree programs and 145 master's and doctoral degree programs. Virginia Tech offers degree programs in agriculture and life sciences, architecture and urban studies, as well as business and engineering.

    James Madison University

    • James Madison University is located in the city of Harrisonburg with a total on-campus enrollment of 17,964 students, according to its web site. JMU offers 68 undergraduate programs, 30 master's degree programs, and six doctoral degree programs. U.S. News & World Report has named James Madison University as the South's top-ranked public master's-level school, and Kiplinger's Personal Finance ranked JMU as the 28th top value among public colleges. Business, communications, education, health and human services, and visual and performing arts are just some of the degree programs offered at JMU.

    Virginia Commonwealth University

    • Founded in 1779, Virginia Commonwealth University enrolls more than 32,000 students on two Richmond campuses. Students chose from over 211 certificate and degree programs. Virginia Commonwealth University also offers an Education Abroad program and an Honors College for advanced students. The VCU Medical Center is the region's only Level I Trauma Center, with a 779-bed facility. According to vcuhealth.org, the Carnegie Foundation ranks the medical center as one of the nation's top research universities

    College of William and Mary

    • Founded in 1693, the College of William and Mary is the nation's second-oldest college, according to the college's Web site. This public university offers degree programs in arts and sciences, business, education, and law. William & Mary also offers graduate degree programs on its campus in historic Williamsburg. U.S. News and World Report ranked this college 6th among all public universities in 2010, according to wm.edu.
