Originally founded in 1865 as Indiana State Normal School before it was changed to the Indiana State Teachers College in 1929, Indiana State University in a state college in Terre Haute. The school was Indiana State College for four years in the 1960s before becoming Indiana State University in 1965.
With an enrollment of just more than 10,000 students, the school draws nearly 80 percent of its attendees from within the state. Indiana State offers more than 100 majors, including criminology, education, communications, business, aerospace technology, recreation and sport management, construction management, and music.

Two of Indiana's public school systems--Indiana University and Purdue University--collaborate with a state university campus in Indianapolis. Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis offers degree programs from both Indiana and Purdue in more than 200 areas of study.
