Mississippi Nursing Schools

Mississippi is home to a number of high-quality nursing programs. The job market for nursing professionals is expected to grow by 22 percent, according to the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections. Obtaining a degree from a nationally recognized program can help you get a leg up on the competition. Students in Mississippi have several opportunities to pursue nursing degrees.
  1. University of Mississippi Medical Center

    • The School of Nursing at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) is the top-rated nursing program in the state of Mississippi. U.S. News & World Report rated the UMMC program as the 115th highest-ranked program in the nation in 2007 (the last year the publication compiled rankings for nursing schools). UMMC offers students a variety of degree program options. Founded in 1948, the nursing program at UMMC has been offering students degree opportunities at all levels for quite some time. UMMC offers a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in a number of different formats. Aside from the traditional full-time baccalaureate program, the university offers early-entry programs to students entering the program from one its satellite campuses in Jackson, Belhaven or Oxford. UMMC also offers the program in an accelerated format. Master's degree programs include the traditional Master of Science degree and the RN-to-MSN degree for nurses already working in the field wanting to quickly finish the bachelor's program and matriculate into the graduate program. USSM offers both the Doctor of Nursing Practice and the Ph.D. at the doctoral level.

    University of Southern Mississippi

    • The second-highest-rated nursing program in Mississippi is the School of Nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). U.S. News & World Report ranked USM's School of Nursing number 167 in the nation in 2007. USM's nursing program was established in 1967. It now offers degrees at all levels. The USM School of Nursing offers the Bachelor of Science degree in a traditional format, as well as in the RN-to-BSN format for registered nursing needing to complete the bachelor's degree. The Master of Science degree program offers a variety of specializations that include that of family nurse practitioner, psychiatric nurse practitioner, the RN to MSN program, gerontology, psychiatric nursing and a nurse executive program. The Ph.D. program at USSM has three areas of emphasis: policy analysis, ethics and leadership.

    Mississippi University for Women

    • The Mississippi University for Women (MUW) is also nationally recognized as a high-quality nursing school. U.S. News & World Report ranked the program at No. 250 in the nation as of 2007. Although the program does not offer a doctorate in the field, it does offer a wide array of other degree options. At the undergraduate level, MUW offers both the Associate of Science and the Bachelor of Science degrees. The Master of Science program is offered in three areas of specialization: family nurse practitioner, geriatric nurse practitioner and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. The program also offers post-master's degree certificates for nurses continuing their education.
