Nursing Schools in Detroit

Located in Wayne County, Michigan, and home to the largest population in the state, Detroit provides extensive opportunities to train to become a nurse. Nursing students can choose from a number of educational institutions and can specialize in such areas as critical care nursing, surgical nursing and hospice care nursing. Students can also train to be nurse practitioners, registered nurses, legal nurses or health care administrators.

    • According to the Wayne State College of Nursing website, its graduate and undergraduate programs are consistently ranked in the top 10 percent of all U.S. nursing programs. The traditional program is three years in length for those entering nursing for the first time, with a second degree/career program available that is 16 months in length for those who have taken undergraduate studies in another field, but wish to pursue a nursing career. A Bachelor of Science (BS) in Nursing is available and requires a minimum of 126 credit hours, the last 30 of which must be completed at Wayne State University. The Master of Science in Nursing degree prepares nurses to be nurse practitioners or certified nurse specialists. This requires 37 to 47 credits of study and students have six years to complete the requirements.

    University of Detroit Mercy

    • For students wishing to pursue a nursing career, the University of Detroit Mercy has its own nursing school, the McAuley School of Nursing. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Nursing program is a full-time curriculum focused on nursing in the community. Candidates must earn 130 semester credit hours to complete the program. There are also a number of Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs available. Specialties include Family Nurse Practitioner, Health Service Management, Nursing Education with a Clinical Nurse Specialty in Adult Health, and Clinical Nurse Leader. All MSN courses can be taken either full time or part time. For nurses looking to further their education, Doctor of Nursing programs, post-bachelor-certificate programs and post-masters Clinical Nurse Specialist programs are also available.

    University of Phoenix

    • The University of Phoenix offers both on-campus and on-line nursing degrees. The Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is designed to develop professional knowledge and skills. The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program offers coursework involving advanced nursing content and practices in addition to leadership skills. All these programs are available on campus and online. Several MSN degrees are available: MSN/Master of Health Administration, MSN/Nursing/Health Care Education and MSN/Specialization in Informatics. A Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing is available for those students who have obtained their master's degrees. These programs are available online exclusively.

    Wayne County Community College District

    • Wayne County Community College District has five campuses located in Wayne County. Over 80 academic programs are available. Students wishing to pursue a nursing career can obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Nursing. Program course requirements include general education courses in addition to specific courses related to the nursing major. Topics such as nursing foundations, medical and surgical nursing, pharmacology, and pediatric nursing are covered. This program prepares graduates to provide nursing care in a variety of health care settings. A total of 72 program credits over four semesters are needed to complete the AASN program.
