Iowa State Colleges

Iowa boasts three state-supported universities. Iowa State University in Ames is in the center of the state, just north of Des Moines. The University of Iowa in Iowa City is in east central Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa is in the northeastern part of the state.
  1. Iowa State University

    • Located in Ames, the 1,788-acre suburban campus is home to a student body of 26,856 as of January 2011. With a student-faculty ratio of 16 to 1, the most frequently chosen bachelor's degrees are in business-marketing, agriculture and engineering. Iowa State boasts 100 majors for its students to choose from. With 800 student organizations and a student body from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, its graduates will have had the opportunity to lead, learn and network.

    University of Iowa

    • The 1,900-acre Iowa City campus offers its 29,747 students a 15 to 1 student-faculty ratio. The most chosen majors are business-marketing, communications, journalism and social science. The University of Iowa is a major national research university. Iowa is composed of 11 colleges, the largest of which is the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Henry B. Tippie College of Business, the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and the Colleges of Education, Engineering, Law, Nursing and Pharmacy enroll undergraduates. The Colleges of Dentistry and Public Health provide graduate education in conjunction with the Graduate College.

    University of Northern Iowa

    • The smallest of the three campuses, located in the town of Cedar Fall, has nearly 13,000 students and a 16 to 1 student-faculty ratio. The most popular majors are business-marketing, education and social sciences. UNI is one of the country's most environmentally responsible colleges, according to "The Princeton Review," and was selected by "G.I. Jobs Magazine" as a Military Friendly School for 2010. Majors in the arts, business, communications, technology, medical arts, literature, government and science and more are available to the students of UNI.

    • Iowa State University's ranks number 94 in the 2011 edition of "Best Colleges" under the category of "national universities."

      As a national university, University of Iowa's ranking in the 2011 edition of Best Colleges is 72.

      UNI ranks 15th in the "Regional Universities (Midwest)" category of the 2011 "Best Colleges."
