U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Minnesota's nursing school No. 32 in the nation, its top rating for the state. The nursing program, established in 1909, offers a wide variety of degree programs including Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Master of Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice and Ph.D. The university also offers a number of postmaster's degree certificates The school of nursing at the University of Minnesota focuses on four primary research areas: health promotion among vulnerable populations, prevention and management of chronic health conditions, symptom management and health/nursing informatics and systems improvement.

The College of St. Catherine in St. Paul is the second-highest-rated school of nursing in Minnesota, according to U.S. News and World Report. Emphasizing its Roman Catholic identity, the college attempts to integrate its Catholic values within the scope of a liberal and professional education. St. Catherine's offers a wide array of degree programs, including an Associate of Science, an LPN to RN program, a Bachelor of Science and a program that allows registered nurses to transition to the Bachelor of Science degree quickly. St. Catherine also offers a Master of Arts in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice. A number of post-baccalaureate certificates are also available.

The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, is ranked 167th in the nation by U.S. News. Students at the College of St. Scholastica have access to hands-on training through the Duluth hospitals and community centers. The nursing school, begun in the 1930s, now offers a wide variety of degree programs. The Bachelor of Science Degree is available in a variety of formats including the traditional full-time program and the RN to BSN program, which is offered both online and on-campus. Post-baccalaureate certificates are also available. The Master of Science program offers specializations in the areas of family nurse practitioner, family psychiatric and mental health, clinical nurse specialist, adult psychiatric care and adult nurse practitioner. In addition to these master's degree programs, the College of St. Scholastica also offers the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.
