N.C. Nursing Schools

If you've decided that being a nurse and taking care of the sick is your calling, the next step is to choose where you will go to school. There are numerous nursing schools in North Carolina. Not only is the "Tar Heel State" a great place to live, but the education system is top-notch.
  1. Online and Campus-Based Option

    • Charlotte, NC offers a city-life experience for students, with added Southern charm.

The University of Phoenix operates a campus in Charlotte, North Carolina (phoenix.edu). University of Phoenix has long been the center of education globally, with over 200 campuses around the world. The school offers RN-to-Bachelor of Science in nursing, Master of Science in nursing (with various specializations available) and a Doctor of Philosophy in nursing. Coursework can be completed online, on site or via a combination of both.

    Nationally-Renown Option

    • The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (unc.edu) is known for its highly competitive and top-notch nursing program. In fact, UNC's School of Nursing tied for fourth in the 2011 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate School rankings. The school received an assessment score of 4.5. This score is based on two types of data: expert opinions and statistical measurements of the quality of a school's faculty, research and students. The UNC Chapel Hill offers bachelor's and master's nursing programs. Post-master's and doctoral programs are also available. Students can focus on areas such as geriatrics, nutrition, and women's health.

    Community College Option

    • Several community colleges in North Carolina provide quality yet cost-effective education for aspiring nurses. Lenoir Community College (lenoircc.edu), in Kinston, offers an associate degree in nursing. Catawba Valley Community College (cvcc.edu), in Hickory, also offers an ADN program. Sampson Community College (sampsoncc.edu) is located in Clinton and offers nurse assistant, practical nursing and registered nursing programs. Sandhills Community college (sandhills.edu), in Pinehurst, offers ADN, LPN-to-ADN bridge, practical nursing and nursing assistant programs.

    Online Option

    • If you don't have the time to linger around classrooms but you still want to pursue nursing, online nursing schools may just be the right option for you. The Chamberlain School of Nursing (chamberlain.edu) offers ADN, BSN, second degree BSN and master's degree programs. However, it is important to point out that the Chamberlain's second degree BSN program is not recognized in North Carolina. Chamberlain enrolls students in its online nursing program throughout the country.
