Guatemala Nursing Schools

Guatemala is a Central American country bordered by Mexico to the north and west and by the Pacific Ocean to the south. The Caribbean islands are located to the East of Guatemala. Guatemala City is the capital and the site of most of the country's institutions of higher learning. Multiple universities offer nursing programs that prepare students to work as nurses or nursing assistants. Volunteer organizations such as Mundo Exchange, report a need for more trained nurses to serve the rural regions of the country.
  1. Universidad Rafael Landivar

    • Located in Guatemala City, the Universidad Rafael Landivar is a private Jesuit University, which has educated multiple Guatemalan presidents including Ramiro de Leon Carpio and Oscar Berger. Within the university's School of Health Sciences, the department of nursing provides several programs. The professionalism in nursing certificate prepares students to become nursing assistants and is a three year program. The Orientation to Nursing in Primary Care program is for students who want to become primary care nurses. Students can also earn a bachelor's degree in nursing.

    Universidad Mariano Galvez de Guatemala

    • The Universidad Mariano Galvez offers programs including social work, physical therapy and nursing. It also offers a Nurses in Service program that prepares nurses to serve as patients in underserved and generally more rural areas throughout the country. Nursing students take classes in biology, math, micrbiology, psychology, pharmacology and anatomy. The university's mission is to prepare graduates who are able to competently address Guatemala's need for more trained nurses. The private University is part of Guatemala's national education system. This University, like Universidad Rafael Landivar is also located in Guatemala City.

    Universidad MesoAmericana

    • With campuses in Guatemala City and Quetzaltenango, Universidad MesoAmericana offers degrees in nursing through the university's school of medicine, which is organized at the university's Quetzaltenango campus. Potential nursing students must pass an entrance exam, which is administered by the school of medicine, complete an interview with the school's dean, provide a notarized copy of middle level certificate records from Guatemala's Ministry of Education and meet the school's morality standards. Founded in 1997, the university draws on Christian inspiration to focus on students and promote social and economic growth in Guatemala.
