The University of California's most prominent nursing programs are at the Los Angeles (UCLA) and San Francisco (UCSF) campuses. UCLA's School of Nursing is open to students who have completed a bachelor's degree and wish to pursue a master of science in nursing (MSN). The UCLA nursing program is diverse in its scope, allowing students to focus their practice several areas, including gerontology, oncology, pediatrics, neuropsychiatry and environmental health. The UCSF nursing program is more selective. It requires prospective master's students to complete a yearlong program titled the Master's Entry Program in Nursing (MEPN) to specialize in acute care, cardiovascular nursing, family nursing, gerontological care, critical care, neonatal practice, and the Advanced Community Health and International Nursing program, among others.

The accredited graduate nursing program at Point Loma Nazarene University emphasizes four specific health care fields: mental health, medicine and surgery, gerontology and family health. Students must choose either an academic or clinical class schedule depending on the type of career they wish to pursue. This narrow scope causes the Point Loma program to have a much focused curriculum, preparing students for specific careers from their first semester of study. Prospective students must not only have a four-year degree, but must display proof of prior clinical experience to apply.
