RN to Bsn Programs in California

Becoming a registered nurse (RN) usually requires at least an associate's degree in nursing, obtained in two years from a community college or technical school. However, an RN can choose to attain a higher level of nursing knowledge by going for a bachelor's degree (BSN). For this reason, RN-to-BSN tracks are designed to give them credit for prior work experience and coursework, thus cutting down the amount of time it would take to earn the degree. In California, just like in other states, these programs are offered in four-year colleges and universities.
  1. Azusa Pacific University

    • A private, inter-denominational, evangelical Christian university located in a Los Angeles suburb, Azusa Pacific University has a RN-to-BSN program that comprises of 40 credits. Students are estimated to complete it in 15 months. Courses include "Christian Worldview and the Profession of Nursing," "Health Assessment," "Theoretical Frameworks in Nursing," "Leadership in Acute Care Settings" and "Human Diversity." APU also offers an online option for the program.

    San Diego State University

    • One of the oldest universities in California, San Diego State University's RN-to-BSN program is offered through its College of Health & Human Services
San Diego State University. It requires a completion of 62 credits, which can be accomplished within two years. SDSU's program is not only available for RNs with associate's degrees, but also RNs with a nursing diploma (hospitals offer the latter, and they can be completed in three years). Candidates already with a bachelor's degree are not eligible to apply.

    University of California Los Angeles

    • The RN-to-BSN program at the University of California Los Angeles, one of the highest-ranked institutions of higher learning in the United States, takes remarkably longer to complete than those of APU and SDSU. Comprising 180 credits---three to four times the amount of units needed for the two aforementioned programs---UCLA's RN-to-BSN can take four years and two summer semesters to finish. The university, however, offers up to a 74-credit transfer in prior coursework for its candidates.
