Students just starting out in the beauty industry may enroll in Beaufort Community College's program in cosmetology, which is a two-year program offering courses in cosmetology concepts, salon, interpersonal psychology and applied communications. Students in the program get hands-on experience working with the community performing discounted services such as chemical restructuring, cornrows, makeup, facials, brow tinting, waxing, pedicure, shampoo, haircuts and scalp treatments.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and be at least age 18. Students who are age 16 or older may enroll in college courses while completing their high school diploma with special dual-education permission.

Carteret Community College offers a certificate in cosmetology, offering students instruction in nail care, chemical processes, hair design, cosmetology concepts, multi-cultural practices, professional imaging, skin care and product information. After completion of the program, students may sit for the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts exam and after passing, receive their license. Students interested in taking their education further may enroll in Carteret's cosmetology instructor curriculum. The cosmetology instructor program requires a current North Carolina cosmetology license, six months full-time salon experience, computer literacy and keyboarding skills and an interview with the cosmetic arts faculty.
High school students may enroll in the program to earn college credits while still in high school. Two letters of personal reference are required. Upon enrollment, students must show a physical exam noting immunizations against hepatitis B and a tetanus shot. Carteret also offers certificate programs in manicuring/nail technology and esthetics technology.

Stanly Community College offers two locations in North Carolina where students may earn an associate of cosmetology degree. The two-year program includes topics such as thermal hair styling, hair removal, salesmanship, brow tinting, contemporary hair coloring, manicuring, anatomy, sanitation, bacteriology and hygiene. Students also take general core classes such as introduction to computers, expository writing, survey of mathematics and humanities. Stanly also offers shorter-term programs, as both a certificate and diploma in cosmetology are available, along with a certificate in esthetics technology. Students interested in sharing their love of cosmetology with others may wish to enroll in the cosmetology instructor or manicuring instructor certificate programs.
Students applying to the associate program must have a high school diploma or GED. A placement test is also required for the program.

Students in South Carolina have a number of locations to select from for a program in the Kenneth Shuler School of Cosmetology, including Columbia, North Augusta, Spartanburg, Florence, Greenville and Rock Hill. The program takes between 10 to 20 months and covers hair additions, hair removal, facials, hair cutting, hair theory, synthetic nail essentials, ethics, client consultations, wet styling, hair theory, sculptured nails, the chemistry of cosmetics and salon retailing. Students get hands-on training through the school's public clinic, which offers discounted services to the community.
Tuition includes the application fees for state board exams and licensing; students receive the required 1,500 hours of training needed to sit for the exam. Candidates must be at least 17 years old with a high school diploma or GED and valid photo ID.
