California BSN Programs

The bachelor of science in nursing is the standard professional nursing degree. There are several colleges and universities in California with high-quality nursing programs. In fact, according to "U.S. News & World Report," 19 California schools were rated in the top 250 nursing programs nationwide. Not all of these programs offer the bachelor's degree,; some top schools only offer graduate level degrees. Nonetheless, those offering the bachelor's degree are a logical choice for potential nursing students.
  1. University of San Francisco

    • One nationally ranked program (No. 54), the University of San Francisco offers the BSN as part of its standard nursing program. The program is accredited by the National League of Nursing and is based on a wide ranging liberal arts curriculum that requires 128 credit hours for graduation. Students receive a broad education in liberal studies while engaging in clinical and classroom training for the nursing program. Aside from prerequisite courses in the basic sciences, students take courses in a wide range of topics such as nursing in the Jesuit tradition, pathophysiology, pharmacology, nutrition in the promotion, restoration and maintenance of health, nursing across the lifespan, nursing therapeutics and assessment of human responses, among others.

    San Diego State University

    • The bachelor of science degree is also offered by the San Diego State University school of nursing. SDSU offers the BSN degree in one of two formats. Students entering from high school enroll in the traditional four year liberal arts curriculum with the equivalent of two years of intensive nursing courses built into the degree plan. Students with an associate's degree who are registered nurses working in the field can enter the degree completion program leading to the bachelor's degree. The program at SDSU is also NLN accredited and offers courses in areas such as fundamentals of microbiology, human physiology, clinical pharmacology in nursing practice, gerontological nursing, psychiatric-mental health nursing and nursing leadership and management.
