BSN Programs

According to the American Nurses Association a minimum of an associate's degree is required sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). A four-year college-level bachelor's program (BSN) provides the critical theory and practice skills to complete the NCLEX-RN exam and go on to a successful career as a nurse. BSN programs typically include two years of liberal arts and science coursework followed by specialized hands-on clinical training.
  1. University of Pittsburgh

    • The University of Pittsburgh's School of Nursing offers three different degree options that all lead to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The baccalaureate program is a first-degree option for students with no prior nursing experience. This four-year full-time program includes focused nursing theory courses, clinical labs, nursing practicum, basic science classes, and a selection off liberal arts classes from the College of Arts and Sciences. Clinical experiences begin during the second year of study, and are held at local Pittsburgh-area hospitals and medical facilities. The Accelerated 2nd Degree program allows students with a prior college degree to earn a BSN at a faster pace than the traditional baccalaureate program. Accelerated students can complete program requirements, excluding prerequisites, in three full-time semesters. Prerequisites include courses in biology, chemistry, human growth and development, genetics, microbiology, pathophysiology, psychology, sociology, and statistics. Registered nurses (RN) without a BSN may apply to the RN Option program. This rigorous course of study allows RN's in the state of Pennsylvania with an associate's degree or diploma to earn a BSN.

    Florida State University

    • The Florida State University College of Nursing offers a traditional BSN program and an accelerated BSN degree. The traditional BSN track is a four-year curriculum that includes two years of prerequisite science and liberal arts studies followed by two years of specialized nursing courses. Students who have an associate's degree from a public Florida college may apply to waive the first two years of study. The accelerated program is designed for students who already have obtained a college-level degree from an accredited institution in a field other than nursing. This is a full-time 12-month program that includes both classroom theory and clinical-practice courses.

    California State University, Long Beach

    • The School of Nursing at California State University Long Beach offers three different BSN options. Each option is individually tailored to a specific type of student. First-time degree-seekers with no prior formal nursing training can apply for the basic baccalaureate option. This program is a four-year full-time course of study that includes basic science, liberal arts, nursing theory, and clinical nursing classes. Prerequisite courses in natural sciences (human anatomy and physiology, microbiology and chemistry) and core general education classes (quantitative reasoning, oral communication, college composition and critical thinking) must be completed prior to beginning the nursing course sequence. Licensed registered nurses may opt for the "registered nurse student" program. This course of study allows RN's in the state of California without a bachelor's degree to pursue a BSN in less time than the traditional four-year program. Students interested in continuing on into graduate study may elect the entry-level 36 month BSN/MSN (Masters of Science in Nursing) option. Applicants to this program option must already hold a first bachelor's degree from an accredited college in any subject. Students must complete the same science and general education prerequisites as required by the traditional BSN.
