To enroll in the LVN to BSN program, the applicant must be a vocational nurse licensed in the state of Texas with a minimum of one year work experience. Before beginning the program, credit hours are awarded for coursework completed during the student's vocational nursing training. Students are also eligible to receive additional credit hours through examination and satisfactory completion of the first semester of the LVN to BSN program. Those who are able to receive the maximum number of awarded credit hours can finish the program in two years. Examples of courses include: child health nursing, community health nursing and adult health nursing.

The LVN to BSN program at University of Texas at Tyler can be completed in four semesters. Students must complete general education and nursing prerequisite courses before they can be considered for admission into the program. Once admitted, students will complete 60 hours of nursing coursework such as nursing research, issues in professional nursing and health of the older adult.
