BSN Programs in Virginia

There are several different types of degrees and certifications you can obtain in the nursing profession. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) requires more training and allows you to have a higher salary than registered nurses (RNs) who obtain their certification after completing an associate degree. The commonwealth of Virginia offers several BSN programs, many of which take about four years to complete.
  1. Virginia Commonwealth University

    • The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Nursing offers two BSN programs, a traditional and accelerated program. The traditional program is a three-year program with students admitted in the fall. Students gain basic nursing knowledge and the skills necessary to work in the field.

The accelerated program provides the same nursing education as the traditional program but at a faster pace. The accelerated BSN program is five semesters long, and graduates will be able to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam. The VCU School of Nursing also offers a program for registered nurses with an associate degree to obtain a BSN degree while working full-time. The program can take up to six years, with some students finishing in 18 months.

The University of Virginia School of Nursing also offers an RN to BSN program, which is flexible, with part of the program conducted online. Prior to admission prospective students must complete general education requirements. In order to obtain the BSN degree students must complete 120 semester hours; 38 of those credits are granted to those who are practicing RNs.
