How to Donate Books to African Nations

Many nations in Africa do not have adequate schools, water or food resources for the people who live there, let alone books. Books of all types are needed in Africa, including educational children's books, books for adults to read in their leisure time, informational books and classic literature. There are many nonprofit organizations that collect books and book funds to send to African nations.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine whether you want to donate money for African nations to buy books or actual books. Knowing this will determine which organizations you should contact and send donations to.

    • 2

Gather any books you want to donate and ensure they are in good condition---this means no page markings, intact covers and bindings, no missing pages and no book stains.

    • 3

Contact nonprofit organizations that donate books to African nations online or by phone. These organizations include Books for Africa (Saint Paul, Minnesota, 651-602-9844), the Rutgers University African Studies Association Book Donation Committee (New Brunswick, New Jersey, 732-932-8173) or the Ethiopian Community Development Council (Arlington, Virginia, 703-685-0510). The organizations will let you know the best way to send in your donation of books or money.

    • 4

Ask the organizations to send you a receipt for tax purposes if you want to claim your donations as a deduction. This will only be possible if the organization is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, nonprofit organization.
