How to Donate Old College Textbooks

Children in developing countries and low-income students living in the United States often do not have access to adequate learning resources and information. Obtaining textbooks is often very costly and sometimes nearly impossible. People with textbooks that are being unused have the opportunity to donate their books to a number of organizations that will, in turn, ship the books to areas and people in need. Choosing to donate your old college textbooks can clear out some much needed storage space and help a child further his education.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if the textbook is in good enough condition to be usable in a classroom. Confirm that publishing date after 2001 or if it is a historical novel that is relevant to current classroom instruction.

    • 2

Choose an organization to which you would like to donate. There are many organizations that cater to specific demographics or areas of the world. Research a number of organizations, and if you have a specific interest in one of these groups then be sure to send your textbooks to them. A few well-known organizations are Goodwill, Books for Africa, Books for the Barrios and The Global Book Exchange, among others.

    • 3

Contact the organization of your choice to request information on how to best donate your old textbooks. Some organizations will pay for the shipping of your books, while other organizations, such as Goodwill, often have donation trucks or centers around the city. Because these organizations are willing to pay for the shipping of these old textbooks it is important that you send books that can be used.
