RN Programs in Chicago

Registered Nurses (RNs) educate patients and the public sector about illnesses and medical conditions. Nurses dispense medical treatment, and advise patients and their families about how to deal with certain conditions and lend emotional support. There are three routes to becoming an RN: through an associate's degree program, bachelor's degree program or a nursing program. RN programs exist nationwide, including the Chicagoland area.
  1. West Suburban College of Nursing

    • The West Suburban College of Nursing, located in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park, is a small, Catholic specialty college. Students can earn two different degrees: The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). Applicants can apply to the nursing program after earning 31 semester hours of required liberal arts and science classes, including physiology, anatomy, microbiology and chemistry, but must have all pre-nursing and general education courses completed before beginning the program.

    DePaul University

    • DePaul University, a Catholic university located in downtown Chicago, prepares students for a nursing career. Graduates of DePaul's nursing program have gone on to work in varied areas of nursing, including case management, community health, hospitals and clinical education. The school also offers a Bachelor of Science in nursing and an RN-BS completion degree for registered nurses who want to earn a Bachelor's degree. Beyond the initial nursing degree, students can earn advanced specialty nursing degrees in adult nursing, anesthesia, education, health systems leadership, pediatric and women's health nursing. Students must have a 2.5 GPA in order to be accepted into the program.

    Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing

    • Loyola University, located on the north side of Chicago, provides a comprehensive nursing program through the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. Students can participate in a bachelor's degree nursing program, accelerated bachelor's degree nursing program, master's of science in dietetics, master's degree in nursing program and doctor of philosophy nursing program.

    University of Illinois at Chicago

    • The nursing program at University of Illinois at Chicago is ranked the 8th best in the country by U.S. News and World Report. The program offers a nursing certificate, bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing. Applicants to the BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) need to have 57 credit hours of prerequisite courses, including practical and clinical training. The school also offers an RN to BSN program for registered nurses who wish to earn a bachelor's degree.

    Northern Illinois University

    • Northern Illinois University, located in suburban Chicago, offers two degree options: the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and the RN to BSN degree for registered nurses who want to earn a bachelor's degree. Students in the BSN program earn 540 hours of clinical experience as well as preparation for their state nursing licensing exam.
