California Nursing Programs

Well-trained nurses are in constant demand in California, which explains why nursing degrees are offered at community colleges, four-year universities and graduate schools in the Golden State. There are public and private institutions across the vast state ready to serve everyone from students seeking to become entry-level registered nurses to seasoned professionals in need of refresher courses.
  1. Associate Degree Program

    • Many community colleges in California offer associate degrees aimed at preparing graduates to become licensed registered nurses. Among them is Sacramento's American River College. Students seeking a Registered Nursing Associate of Science Degree learn to effectively interact with patients of all ages and within a variety of healthcare settings.

    Baccalaureate Degree Program

    • Quality undergraduate and graduate nursing programs are offered at several state universities. The Department of Nursing at California State University, Fullerton, provides students with the tools to perform as professional nurses with basic or advanced levels of expertise. These programs also provide students the necessary foundation for further education, specialization and lifelong learning for personal and professional growth.

    • Like other universities with nursing programs in California, San Francisco State University provides baccalaureate and graduate education in quality nursing care. But like SFSU students seeking Master's in psychology or social work, the School of Nursing's Master's candidates participate in outreach programs that serve the San Francisco Bay Area, emphasizing the needs of culturally diverse people in urban environments.

    Private University

    • The vast majority of nursing programs in California are offered at public colleges and universities. Among the private institutions that follow suit is the University of San Diego, whose Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science offers four-year, Master's and doctorate programs. Dedicated to preparing leaders who excel at ethical conduct and compassionate service, the Hahn School celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2010, the same year the Roman Catholic university marked its sixtieth year.

    Refresher Courses

    • The Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), a state governmental agency within California's Department of Consumer Affairs, was established by law to protect the public by regulating the practice of registered nurses. The BRN maintains an online list of refresher courses and NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) review resources offered around the state, without approving nor endorsing any particular program. Separate lists on the BRN website link to California public and private colleges and universities that offer associate, Bachelor's, Master's and doctorate degrees in nursing.
