Nurse practitioners are care providers that work under the direction of a physician. General job duties are similar to doctors, as nurse practitioners diagnose and treat patients and are able to write prescriptions when called for. Common specialty areas include adult and family practice, women's health, pediatrics, geriatrics and acute care. A master's degree in nursing is required to become a nurse practitioner. SSU offers an MSN program with a concentration as family nurse practitioner; the program is fully accredited by the National League of Nursing and approved by the California Board of Nursing. The program can be completed in two years of full-time study and in three years of part-time study. Some of the courses in this program include pharmacology for FNPs, ethics in health care, professional issues and leadership, health maintenance and scholarly inquiry. Classes are taught in classrooms, online and in lab settings. Students will also participate in practicums and clinical internships. Graduates will qualify to sit for national certification through American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) FNP exam or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioner (AANP) exam.

    California State University Sacramento

    • California State University Sacramento is a public university located in the state capitol of Sacramento, California. The nurse practitioner program at CSUS is fully accredited and is a joint program between CSUS and UC Davis, just east of Sacramento in Davis, California. The only concentration available is family nurse practitioner and the program requires completion of at least 33 units of coursework. Some of the coursework includes nursing core classes, ethics, advanced role development in nursing, family practice, geriatric medicine, health assessment and pharmacology. Overall, this is a 120 unit program that generally takes two years to complete. All nursing core classes are taught at the Sacramento campus and concentration classes are taught at the Davis campus. Graduates will be eligible to take any state and national nurse practitioner certification/license testing.

SFSU offers a fully accredited nurse practitioner program with a concentration in family nurse practitioner. This two year program consists of 46 units and 600 clinical hours of coursework. Core nursing classes include ethics in advanced nursing role development, advanced nursing role application and theoretical basis of nursing. Family nurse practitioner coursework includes professional issues and nurse practitioner skills, diagnosis and management in primary care and principles of pharmacology. The school also offers a FNP certificate program that will prepare graduates for work in the field and to take national and state certification and licensure exams.
