Masters in Nursing Practitioner Programs

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who performs some of the same functions as a doctor. A nurse practitioner may provide primary or specialty care, and in the United States, may write prescriptions. A registered nurse who wishes to become a nurse practitioner must continue her education with a master's degree, a post-master's certificate or a doctoral degree.

    • The University of California, San Francisco offers a master of science program with a specialty in acute care nurse practitioner that prepares graduates to work in settings such as the emergency room and surgery. The program includes training in the areas of critical care, cardiopulmonary care and emergency department/trauma care. Students learn pharmacology, interpretation of lab and chest X-rays and patient care management, among other topics. A post-master's certificate also is offered. Degree requirements include classroom and clinical work, with courses such as advanced health assessment, symptom assessment and management, and EKG practicum. Students must study full-time, as no part-time option is offered.

    Ball State University

    • Ball State University's master of science program offers tracks of study in adult nurse practitioner and family nurse practitioner. For the adult nurse practitioner program, students must complete 43-49 hours, including courses in nursing theory, clinical role, pathophysiology and advanced clinical pharmacology. The family nurse practitioner track has similar course requirements, but this program's 50-56 hours of study also includes courses in primary care of children and primary care of women. A thesis is optional in both programs

    Baylor University

    • Baylor University offers a 37-credit hour course of study in which students can earn a master of science in nursing degree with a major in neonatal nurse practitioner. Students must have two years of neonatal critical care nursing experience. Courses include development physiology of the fetus/newborn and advanced assessment and diagnostics of the newborn/infant, as well as a residency. Students must complete 675 clinical hours before graduation. Students may study full time or part-time.
