Drexel University's online nursing program, one of the nation's largest, offers degrees in three specialized nurse practitioner fields: adult acute care, adult psychiatric mental health and women's health. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in nursing with at least a 3.0 GPA from an accredited nursing program, as well as a current registered nurse license. Drexel University does have a residency requirement for the nurse practitioner program, which means students must be licensed and willing to complete practical rotations in one of seven states or Washington, DC.

The Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing has been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best graduate nursing programs in the country. The Frontier School offers two specialty nurse practitioner distance learning programs and a doctor of nursing practice degree, which RN Degrees notes will be required for all nurse practitioners beginning in 2015. Candidates for admission must have a current registered nurse license for the state in which they work, at least a 3.0 GPA with completion of an upper-level undergraduate or graduate statistics course, as well as physical assessment training.

St. Joseph's College of Maine offers an online nurse practitioner degree in family nursing for registered nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Applications for this distance-learning program are accepted year-round, and prospective students must have a current registered nurse's license and have completed at least one year of clinical practice experience. All training is completed online, except for two required on-campus courses, each lasting one week, that take place during the summer. A specialization in primary care is also offered.

The University of Utah College of Nursing distance learning program offers a doctor of nursing practice degree for nurse practitioners with specialization options in adult/gerontology, family health and pediatrics. Admission requirements include at least a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a current registered nurse's license, and a minimum of two years of clinical practice as an RN, with extra consideration given to nurses with more practice experience. On-campus residencies are required for orientation to the program and at least once or twice per semester.
