A nurse practitioner is an advanced practical nurse with a master's degree. Nurse practitioners can specialize in areas such as family nursing, neonatal nursing and pediatrics as well as women's health and acute care.     • The University of Texas Arlington offers an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program where students can receive either a master's degree or a post-master's certificate. Students who enroll in the certificate plan take courses in Theory and Research as well as Advanced Pharmacology and Pathophysiology, Psychiatric Management and Invasive Skills. Those who opt for the degree plan take the above courses as well as complete a comprehensive elective, a master's project and a thesis.

    University of California Davis

    • The University of California Davis offers a Family Nurse Practitioner program where students receive a Master of Science degree in Nursing. Students with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or the equivalent, are eligible for enrollment. The program takes three years to complete, and classes are taught in the evening. Coursework includes Advanced Role Development in Nursing and Concepts, Theory Development in Nursing, Research as the Foundation for Advanced Nursing, Educational Program Development in Nursing and Community and Health Services and Policy.

    Louisiana State University

    • Louisiana State University offers a Nurse Practitioner program leading to a Master of Nursing degree. Students can focus on either the Family Nurse Practitioner or the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program. On a full-time schedule, the curriculum is designed to be completed in three years; coursework consists of Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Statistics, Advanced Pharmacology, Nursing Research and Primary Care in Community Health. Students enrolled in the neonatal track also study Neonatal Physiology and Nursing Management of the High Risk Neonate.
