    • More than 51,000 students attend the University of Minnesota at Twin Cities Minneapolis-based campus. Courses offered in the university's School of Nursing graduate program include a traditional Master of Science in Nursing for nurse practitioners with an emphasis on family health, pediatrics, special needs pediatrics or gerontology. In addition, the school offers a women's nurse health care practitioner program, which consists mainly of Internet-based courses and requires nurses to attend programs on campus only a few times per year. Clinical rotations are mandatory in all courses of study, and nurses typically spend two years completing the requirements for the master's degree.

    School of Nursing at the College of Saint Scholastica

    • Since the Roman Catholic Church founded the College of St. Scholastica in the city of Duluth in 1912, the college has grown to a total enrollment of more than 3,500 students. Specializations in the school's Master of Science in Nursing nurse practitioner programs include adult nursing, family health and both adult and family mental health nursing. Program require 37 to 51 credits to complete and can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis. Nurses in the college's graduate nursing programs have the option to conduct independent research while attending classes and completing clinical hours.

    Metropolitan State University

    • Founded in 1971, Metropolitan State University is home to more than 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students at its campus in St. Paul. Among the specialties available for Master of Science in Nursing are nurse practitioner programs in adult and geriatrics, family medicine and women's health. All master's-level students take classes in ethics, research, nursing leadership and public policy. Nurse practitioner candidates complete at least two clinical rotations prior to graduation and are required to write a culminating research paper that is presented formally both to peers and faculty.
