Nurse practitioners provide primary care to patients under the supervision of physicians. They diagnose and treat diseases and injuries in patients. Nurse practitioners are highly trained and can specialize in different fields. Minimally, they must possess a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree in order to practice. There are several programs located in Tennessee that offer advanced nursing degrees for nurse practitioners.

    • The Vanderbilt University School of Nursing is located in Nashville, Tennessee. The school offers an MSN degree with several concentrations, including family, pediatric, women's health, emergency and neonatal nursing. The school also offers dual degrees in several combinations of these concentrations. There are several entry options for students with associate and bachelor's degrees in nursing as well as students with degrees in other fields. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees are also available for nurse practitioners who already possess MSN degrees.

    University of Tennessee - Knoxville College of Nursing

    • The University of Tennessee - Knoxville is the primary university in the University of Tennessee system. Its college of nursing offers MSN degrees with concentrations in adult health, gerontological, pediatric and psychiatric nursing. Students take seven core courses in the fundamentals of nursing practice, six research hours and between 13 and 40 hours in their chosen concentration.

    Middle Tennessee State University School of Nursing

    • Middle Tennessee State University School of Nursing is located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The school offers an MSN degree in family practice nursing. The program is offered online through the Tennessee Board of Regent’s Online Degree Program. Students take 15 core hours where they learn the fundamentals of being a nurse practitioner. Students also take 10 hours in advanced nursing subjects such as pharmacology and pathophysiology. Students take 17 hours in family practice nursing.
