Acute care nurse practitioners assess and treat acutely ill patients in many inpatient and hospital settings. The state of New York has a few graduate nursing programs that confer master's nursing degrees for acute care nurse practitioner licensure. These programs offer numerous attendance and scheduling options for potential students to choose the program that best suits their goals.

    • The School of Nursing at Columbia University confers a master of science in nursing for acute care nurse practitioner licensure. The program admits students in the summer and takes five semesters to complete at full-time status. Prerequisites for the program include undergraduate courses in statistics and physical assessment. Other requirements include current New York registered nursing licensure with a minimum of one year of experience, a bachelor’s degree, Graduate Record Exam scores, three letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a resume.

    New York University

    • Applicants to the acute care nurse practitioner program at the College of Nursing at New York University can choose to obtain a master of science in nursing or a certificate of completion if they already have a master's degree in nursing. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and students matriculate in the summer, fall or spring. Admission requirements include two professional references, a personal statement, a bachelor’s degree, prerequisite courses in statistics and nursing research and a resume. There is no entrance exam required. Students can study on a part-time or full-time basis.

    Stony Brook University

    • The School of Nursing at Stony Brook University allows adult acute care nurse practitioner students to choose from full-time or part-time status and online or on-campus attendance. Requirements for admission include a bachelor's degree in nursing with at least a 3.0 GPA, current registered nurse licensure, three letters of recommendation, statement of intent, proof of health and malpractice insurance, prerequisite courses in health assessment and statistics, a resume and CPR certification. Students matriculate in the fall.
