Registered Nurse Programs in New York

As the largest occupation in the healthcare industry, employment opportunities for registered nurses are expected to grow by 22 percent before 2018, according to a study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In order to pursue a career as a registered nurse (RN), an individual must complete an approved degree program, followed by obtaining a license in the state he or she wishes to obtain employment.     • The College of Nursing at New York University offers students the opportunity to obtain their undergraduate degree and continue to the graduate degree program if desired. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing which can be completed in four years. Students must complete both general education coursework and core nursing classes, as well as participate in clinical practice. Training is provided in the fields of nursing practice, nurse-patient interaction, adult health nursing, maternity nursing, pathophysiology, pharmacotherapeutics and leadership and management in nursing.     Columbia University

    • The Columbia University School of Nursing program offers a combined Bachelor's and Master's degree program for prospective nurses who already hold a four-year degree in a different field. The program combines classroom education with clinical practices throughout New York, and allows students to choose a specialty field during the Master's degree program. Students receive training in pharmacology, nursing practice with children, physiology, advanced practice nursing, mental health nursing and nursing practice with adults.     Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing

    • Students attending the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing have the option to choose between a standard RN program, an accelerated RN program for those who have a degree in a separate field and a combined Bachelor's and Master's degree program. The university is adjacent to hospitals such as Bellevue Hospital, NYU Medical Center and the VA Hospital, providing a student with the opportunity to work in a hospital setting during her clinical practices. In addition to general education coursework, students receive training in the fields of research and theory, advancement of roles and relationships in nursing, mental health studies, pharmacology and urban disaster response.
