Registered Nurse Programs in Massachusetts

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nurses constitute the largest occupation in the health care industry. As of 2010, there are over two and a half million registered nurses, with employment opportunities expected to increase by 22 percent before 2018. To obtain employment as an RN, an individual must complete an approved degree program and then satisfy the licensing requirements for the state in which they want to practice. Massachusetts has a number of colleges offering degree programs in the field of nursing.

    • The Connell School of Nursing at Boston College offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program as well as specialty degree programs to become a nurse anesthetist or a nurse practitioner. The undergraduate program is a full-time, four-year course of study combining hands-on learning with classroom education. The school also allows students to spend one semester studying abroad at a number of sponsored programs. Students receive training in trauma, critical care, mental health illnesses, pharmacology, medical terminology and forensic nursing. As of 2010, tuition costs at Boston College are $20,000 per semester. Financial assistance is available for those who qualify.

    University of Massachusetts - Amherst

    • Students attending the University of Massachusetts - Amherst School of Nursing have a number of choices when deciding which degree path to pursue, including undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Undergraduate students may choose from a traditional Bachelor of Science degree program, an accelerated second Bachelor's program or an RN to BS online degree. Students receive training in such fields as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, psychology, medical microbiology, nursing ethics, adult care, pediatrics and pharmacology. In addition, all students must complete clinical practice experiences before graduation. Those interested in continuing their education can obtain a Master of Science degree, a doctoral degree or take part in a Clinical Nurse Leader program. As of the 2010 academic year, resident tuition costs are $110 per credit hour, with costs of $414 per credit hour for nonresidents. Financial assistance is open to all students.

    Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

    • The nursing degree program of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences offers either a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a Master of Science in Family Nurse Practitioner. Students can choose from the 32-month accelerated undergraduate program at the school's Boston campus or the 16-month postbaccalaureate program offered by the Worcester and Manchester campuses to those who currently have a Bachelor's degree. Courses include anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, nursing procedures, ethics, medical terminology, adult and pediatric care and mental health conditions. Before graduation, students must complete clinical practice experiences. As of the 2010-2011 academic year, tuition costs are $910 per credit hour. Financial aid options are available for qualified students.
