Registered Nurse Programs in the Chicago Area

Registered nurses perform various advanced nursing functions in health care facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices and long term care facilities. Registered nurses are referred as RNs. RN programs in the Chicago area are found at universities, private educational institutions and community colleges. According to Indeed.com in 2010, the median annual salary for registered nurses in the Chicago area is $69,000.

    • Loyola University is an independent, Jesuit university located in north Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan. Loyola offers various certificate, undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing. The Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing at Loyola is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The undergraduate BSN program leads to a career as a registered nurse. Graduates of this program are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX-RN, to become licensed registered nurses. Some of the classes include foundations of pharmacology, clinical nutrition, physical assessment, altered adult health patterns and community health. Loyola also offers an accelerated BSN program for nurses and health care professionals.

    University of Illinois at Chicago

    • University of Illinois at Chicago is the largest university in the Chicago area. This public university offers a variety of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral nursing programs that are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The BSN program, which leads to a career as an RN, offer two tracks: a traditional program for students wishing to become RNs and an accelerated program for licensed RNs. The classes in both programs are the same; however, the accelerated track students are able to bypass certain classes based on experience. Some of the coursework includes Concepts and Processes of Professional Nursing, Clinical Concepts and Processes in Adult Health, Introduction to Clinical Concepts and Processes, Health Assessment and Issues in Nursing Practice. It takes at least two years to complete the traditional track and the the accelerated option can be competed within a year, depending on how many classes are needed. Graduates of this program will qualify to take the NCLEX-RN to become licensed registered nurses.

    Truman College

    • Truman College is one of the colleges in the City Colleges of Chicago junior college system. Truman is located in uptown Chicago and the nursing program at Truman was the first Associate degree in Nursing in Illinois. The nursing program is accredited by the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Graduates of this program will be able to sit for the NCLEX-RN to become licensed registered nurses. Some of the coursework in the 70 credit programs includes human structure and function, nursing process and alterations, nursing in perspective and fundamentals of nursing. General education coursework is also required. An accelerated one-year curriculum is available for LPNs.
