Founded in 1963 by the Sisters of Divine Providence, La Roche College's Master of Science in Health Science (Nurse Anesthesia) program prepares registered nurses for careers specializing in anesthesia administration and research, as well as for leadership roles as nurse practitioners. Coursework focuses on anesthesia practice, pharmacology, biochemistry, research, medical physics and anesthetic didactics. Requirements for admission to the program include a bachelor's degree, current nursing license, grade point average of 3.0 or above, satisfactory Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores and a minimum of one year of nursing experience.

Carlow University offers two disciplines within their MSN programs: Nursing Leadership and Family Nurse Practitioner. The Nursing Leadership program centers its coursework on using advanced leadership expertise and knowledge in health care environments, while the Family Nurse Practitioner emphasis is a traditional program, teaching students advanced nursing skills in the area of family care. Students may complete the Nursing Leadership program in one year with full-time study; the Family Nurse Practitioner program takes two to four years.

Chatham University houses over 2,000 students and, while Chatham College limits admittance to women only, the College for Graduate Studies is open to men and women. Chatham's Master of Science in Nursing program focuses on core nursing practices and class length runs seven weeks at a time. Once the core classes are complete, students can choose one of two specialty courses: Leadership/Management or Nursing Education. Coursework concentrates on nursing theory, research, leadership and curriculum development.

The University of Pittsburgh offers four different majors within the Master of Science in Nursing program. Students can complete the program with either full- or part-time study. The Nursing Specialty major allows students to choose an emphasis in nursing administration, clinical nurse leadership, education, research or nursing informatics. Meanwhile, students also can major in clinical nursing or nurse anesthesia, or enroll in the nurse practitioner track. Each major has the same core coursework, which includes research, statistics and disease prevention. Students majoring in anesthesia, clinical nursing and nurse practitioner areas also must complete courses in pathophysiology, diagnostic examinations, pharmacology and leadership.
