Colleges With a MSN in Nursing

A Master of Science in Nursing degree, or MSN, is an educational path for students who already have earned their Bachelor of Science in nursing. Obtaining a MSN allows students to specialize in areas such as pediatrics or surgery and to learn managerial skills that can be applied to administration or a teaching program. When entering a graduate program, students usually will choose a specialty such as adult care, family care or pediatrics.
  1. Johns Hopkins University: School of Nursing

    • Johns Hopkins University is in Baltimore, Maryland, and consistently ranks in the top 10 in the country for nursing schools. Students seeking a MSN have several choices for specialty tracks, including adult primary care nurse practitioner, family primary care, pediatric primary care and women's health nurse specialist. Admission requirements include a BS in nursing, a GPA of at least 3.0, GRE test scores and an interview with a faculty member.

    Ohio State University: College of Nursing

    • Ohio State University's College of Nursing is in Columbus, Ohio. Students with a BS in nursing may apply to the traditional MSN program, and those with a BS in another field may apply to the Graduate Entry MSN program. Students in either program may choose a specialty in aging, college and university teaching, early intervention/early childhood or global health. Admission to the College of Nursing master's program requires a BS, GRE scores and at least a 3.0 GPA.

    University of Washington: School of Nursing

    • The University of Washington's School of Nursing was ranked No. 1 in the nation in 2007 by "U.S. News & World Report." Located in Seattle, the School of Nursing offers many specialties, including adult nurse practitioner, community health nursing, neonatal clinical nurse specialist, nurse-midwifery and pediatric nurse practitioner. Admission requirements include a BS in nursing or a degree from a RN program, three letters of recommendation and at least a 3.0 GPA. If admitted to the program, students must possess an unrestricted, active RN license in the state of Washington.

    University of California, San Francisco: School of Nursing

    • The University of California, San Francisco's School of Nursing was ranked No. 2 in the nation in 2007 by "U.S. News & World Report." The program usually takes two years to complete, and students can choose from specialties including adult nurse practitioner, oncology nurse, family nurse practitioner, perinatal nurse and cardiovascular nurse. Students with a BS in a field other than nursing can apply to the school's Masters Entry Program in Nursing. For admission, UCSF no longer requires GRE scores. It does require a BS in nursing, a registered nurse license, at least a 3.0 GPA and at least one year of work experience as a RN.
