Community Colleges With RN Programs

According to the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nursing is the largest single health care profession in the country. Registered nurses (RNs) currently fill more than 2.6 million positions in hospitals, doctor's offices, medical centers, mental health facilities and in other health care-related facilities. Jobs in nursing are expected to grow by approximately 22% by the year 2018. Individuals interested in joining the nursing profession must have a minimum of an associate's or bachelor's degree. Students can typically earn an associate's degree leading to RN licensure at a community college in two years of full time study.
  1. Community College of Allegheny County

    • The Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC), located in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, offers a two-year associate's of science degree in nursing. This community college program prepares students to take the NCLEX-RN licensure exam and subsequently begin a nursing career in an entry level position. The nursing curriculum is offered at the Allegheny, Boyce, North and South campuses, and consists of 68 credit hours of classes in nursing, liberal arts, and the sciences. All nursing classes have a classroom/theory component as well as a clinical hands-on practicum. Clinical experiences are completed at local hospitals and medical facilities. Students may elect a full-time day or evening option. Additionally, some classes may be taken as distance learning courses online. CCAC's RN program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, Inc.

    Hawaii Community College

    • The Hawaii Community College of the University of Hawaii offers an associate's of science in nursing program that is accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission. This two-year program consists of 42 credits in nursing and 30 credits in general education and science classes. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics before acceptance into the program. All students must have a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) to continue in the nursing curriculum. Successful completion of Hawaii Community College's RN degree program gives confers eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN exam.

    South Seattle Community College

    • The RN program at South Seattle Community College is a three-quarter, 102-credit program for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) wishing to become RNs. This full-time program is typically taken during evening and weekend hours. Completion of all course requirements makes a student eligibile to sit for the NCLEX-RN examination. Applicants must hold a current, valid LPN license in the State of Washington, submit all high school and post-secondary transcripts and complete all necessary academic prerequisites, including mathematics and college-level English. All students must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average to graduate from the program.
