Acute Nursing Assistant Programs at Community Colleges

Acute nursing assistants provide short-term care for patients who have suffered serious injuries in an accident or suffered a serious health problem that requires short-term care. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that nursing assistants typically need to complete at least a postsecondary certificate to begin their work, and many states require nursing assistants to become certified by passing a statewide exam. Many community colleges also offer associate degree programs for those who want additional training.
  1. Eastern Programs

    • At Delaware Community College, students can complete a nursing assistant course that includes training in acute care. The "Excellence in Care" program includes 133 hours of classroom instruction and 60 hours of clinical experience. The program also includes leadership training. Quinsigamond Community College in Massachusetts offers a nursing assistant certificate that prepares students for work in acute care. The program is 23 credits long and can be completed in under a year. Students who have previous professional experience and academic credit may be able to earn advance credit for the program.

    Western Programs

    • Klamath Community College in Oregon provides a four-credit course for certified nursing assistants who want to specialize in acute care. The program includes classroom instruction, lab time and hands-on experience in a clinical setting to teach students how to promote client healing and independence. At Rio Hondo College in California, students can complete a certified nurse assistant acute care-training course. The course, which is designed for professionals already working as CNAs, includes 24 hours of classroom instruction and 48 hours of clinical practice at an acute care hospital.

    Midwestern Programs

    • At Lansing Community College in Michigan, students can complete two programs in acute care: Long-Term Care to Acute Care and Nursing Aide: Acute Care and Long-Term. The first program is part of a two-course sequence with training in long-term care. The second is an eight-credit course that meets for six weeks. Both provide training in acute care and qualify students to take the CNA certifying exam. At Minneapolis Community & Technical College, students have the option to complete a nursing aide/home health aide certificate with an additional acute care option. Both options take eight hours to complete.

    Southern Programs

    • Southern Union State Community College in Alabama offers an award of achievement to train nursing assistants, and it includes training in acute care. The 10-week course is a non-credit program. However, the program does prepare students to take the certifying exam to begin practice. At Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Alabama, students can complete a program for certified nursing assistants in one semester. The 75-hour course prepares students to work in acute care and other settings and prepares them for the nurse aide certification exam.
