Top Community College Nursing Programs

Jobs for registered nurses continue to increase in the United States. Employment prospects from 2010 to 2018 will be excellent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook. Community colleges offer a thorough education for prospective registered and practical nurses, with most schools providing comprehensive training in two years. Nurses in the U.S. earned a median salary of $62,450 as of May 2008.

    • The highly competitive RN nursing program at Suffolk County Community College in upstate New York offers a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree, according to Community College Week. Recipients of this degree take the National Council Licensure Exam to receive a registered nurse license. The SCCC practical nursing program consists of a 37-credit, one-year curriculum. Once you receive your certificate of completion, you take the NCLEX test to become a licensed practical nurse. Working practical nurses can enroll in the community college's PN-to-RN transition program. Nurses receive credit for their work experience, along with class credits for the NUR130 course. SCCC nursing students visit hospitals and community medical and social offices as part of their training. The college has three campuses, in Riverhead, Brentwood and Selden. All offer nursing courses.

    Austin Community College, Texas

    • The Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing offered by the Austin Community College district allows you to study in a traditional program, an accelerated mobility-track program or an alternate-entry program for those with prior credits or work experience. The school requires at least a 2.7 grade-point average in anatomy, microbiology, mathematics, physiology and pharmacology before you can be admitted into the program. The two-year degree program includes classes in complex concepts of adult health, mental health nursing, introduction to speech, clinical decision making and a childbearing and child rearing clinic. The Austin Community Colleges are recognized by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the Texas Board of Nursing.

    • The Community College of Allegheny County ranks second in the number of two-year nursing graduates among community colleges in the United States, according to Community College Weekly. The Associate of Science in nursing includes courses in math, English composition, psychology and chemistry to fulfill science and general requirements. The nursing classes cover human growth and development, illness prevention, dimensions in nursing and professional challenges. Upon graduating Allegheny, you are prepared to take the NCLEX-RN examination or pursue a Bachelor of Science in nursing at affiliate college California University of Pennsylvania or another school.
