For individuals pursuing a career in nursing, there are a number of schools in Utah that offer associate, bachelor, or master's level degrees. The top programs have a highly selective admissions process and prepare students for the registered nurse licensure exam administered by National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

    • The College of Nursing at the University of Utah offers baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral level degree programs. Certificates and a master’s degree in gerontology are also offered. Applicants of the Bachelor of Science program must hold a 3.0 GPA and submit three letters of recommendation, a written essay on a topic selected by the College of Nursing, and a professional resume. Students must complete ten prerequisite courses with a minimum grade of “C” or better before entering into the nursing major program. These include biology, physiology, chemistry, growth and development, nutrition, and statistics. Upper-level coursework includes nursing theory and skills, management of drug therapy, pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical care for adults, pediatric and maternity care, psychiatric nursing, and community health.

    Southern Utah University

    • Southern Utah University offers a bachelor of science in nursing. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in order to be considered for admission. Students must first complete a series of “required support courses” with a minimum GPA of 3.0 before entering into senior level nursing requirements. These courses include human anatomy physiology, microbiology, pathophysiology, chemistry, statistics, nutrition, and psychology. Advanced coursework includes nursing practice, pharmacology, adult care, mental health and community health nursing, nursing theory, geriatrics, leadership, management, and health promotion.

    Brigham Young University

    • Brigham Young University’s College of Nursing is affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and offers both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree in nursing. Candidates must complete a series of pre-nursing general education requirements before entering into the full-time six semester nursing program. Candidates must achieve an average grade of “C” or better and submit two letters of recommendation, proof of current CPR certification, and a resume that shows participation in the community or church and time spent as a volunteer. Upper-level coursework includes physiology; health assessment and promotion; community and public health nursing; pharmacology; acute and chronic illness care; mental health nursing; and nursing for women and newborns. Students also complete up to 12 hours of hands-on clinical training each week.

    Westminster College

    • Westminster College offers a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.70 and obtain a minimum grade of “C” or higher in their prerequisite coursework. Candidates must also submit three reference letters attesting to their academic and professional suitability for the program and a statement of intent on why he or she wishes to pursue a career in nursing. Coursework topics include obstetrics, critical care, pediatrics, community health, gerontology, psychiatric care, and surgical nursing. The program also uses adult and pediatric “human simulator laboratories” in which students receive hands-on clinical training.
