Community College Nursing Schools

Jobs for nurses are expected to grow by 22 percent through 2018, according to the United States Department of Labor. To become a nurse, you must begin by getting a degree from an accredited nursing school. Many students are choosing the community college route, because community colleges are less expensive than four-year universities and coursework can often be applied toward obtaining a bachelor's degree in nursing later.
  1. Riverside Community College

    • Riverside Community College in California offers both a vocational nursing degree program and associate degree program in nursing (ADN). Graduates of the ADN program are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN national licensure exam and apply their course credits towards a bachelor's degree. Course offerings include nursing concepts, nursing roles and relationships and a clinical practicum. A drug screen and a clinical background check must be submitted before students can begin clinical hours. The program lasts four semesters, which does not include required pre-nursing courses in anatomy and physiology, chemistry, microbiology, psychology and chemistry. Riverside Community College does not maintain a waiting list; if you are not admitted when you apply the first time, you must reapply the next semester.

They must also have taken the National League of Nursing's pre-admission exam, called the PAX-RN. Space in the program is limited, and students are chosen based on overall academic performance, grade point average and scores on the PAX-RN. Queensborough's curriculum features core courses in human growth and development and English, as well as issues and trends in nursing and nursing care essentials.
