Licensed practical nurses, or LPNs, are professional nurses that perform a variety of clerical and clinical duties in medical settings such as hospitals, clinics and physician offices. LPNs are often responsible for taking patients' vital signs, assisting in minor surgeries, taking patient histories and educating patients on proper health care, among other things. It is expected that the career opportunities of LPNs will increase 21 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
