The Roman Catholic Church established the University of Portland in 1901, and since that time, the school has grown to an undergraduate enrollment of more than 3,000 students. The college's School of Nursing grants bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing and a doctorate in Nursing Practice. All students in the undergraduate program must complete classes in theology and religion. Clinical rotations include focuses on maternal medicine, mental health and physiological nursing. Those studying for a bachelor's degree can also complete a one-term study abroad at the University of Notre Dame Australia in Fremantle, Australia.

Established in 1966, Mt. Hood Community College is home to more than 27,000 students on its three campuses. The public college's nursing program is offered at the Bruning Center for Allied Health Education in Gresham. The college offers an associate's degree in nursing, which prepares students for careers as registered nurses in the state of Oregon. To gain entry into the program, students must pass a criminal background check and drug screening and successfully complete prerequisite courses in biology, anatomy, English, nutrition, human development and computer science. Students accepted to the program may study full- or part-time, and have the option to spend a third year at Oregon Health & Science University to complete a bachelor's degree in the field. During the program, students complete clinical rotations in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics and with public health agencies.

Located in Ontario, just a few miles from the Oregon-Idaho border, Treasure Valley Community College is a public institution with more than 12,000 students. To be considered for admission to the program, students are encouraged first to take classes in biology, chemistry and mathematics. A criminal background check is also necessary. All students complete the nursing program in two stages, first finishing a one-year curriculum in licensed practical nursing. Then, students spend one year completing the requirements for an associate's degree, which can lead to registered nursing certification. Six clinical rotations are required throughout the two-year program.
