Small Oregon Colleges

Oregon students looking for a more personal college experience than a large university offers can choose from a number of small colleges in the state. Rather than being one of tens of thousands of students at a large state university, students at small Oregon colleges can build relationships with their professors and peers in a more intimate way. Students can choose from a range of degree programs at small Oregon colleges as well.
  1. Willamette University

    • Located in Salem, Willamette University had a student enrollment of just 2,693 for the 2010 to 2011 academic year. The college offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in liberal arts fields, such as anthropology, international studies, psychology and theater. The school has more than 300 faculty members, and 96 percent of them have a Ph.D. or terminal degree in their field. Undergraduate courses average just 14 students, with a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio. During the 2010 to 2011 school year, only one class at the college exceeded 39 students.

    Reed College

    • Reed College sits in a residential area of southeast Portland and has a student enrollment of 1,400. The school has 145 faculty members and boasts a 10:1 student-to-faculty ratio. The college includes 22 departments ranging from humanities to political science to religion. Class sizes average 15 students, and students engage each other in interactive, conference-style class setups. The campus includes 23 residence halls, allowing many of its students to live conveniently on campus.

    Lewis and Clark College

    • Also located in Portland, Lewis and Clark College has an enrollment of 1,905 students. In addition to offering undergraduate liberal arts degrees, the college includes a Graduate School of Education and Counseling as well as a School of Law. The student-to-faculty ratio at Lewis and Clark is 12:1. The school distributes more than $33 million in financial aid to undergraduate students every year, resulting in 72 percent of undergraduates receiving financial aid.

    Linfield College

    • McMinnville, Oregon's Linfield College has an enrollment of 1,700 students. With an average class size of 17 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1, students receive personalized attention at the school. Linfield offers a liberal arts curriculum and undergraduate degrees in fields such as accounting, history and studio art. Students can minor in fields such as visual culture, creative writing and media studies. Linfield also has a campus in Portland, where its Nursing and Health Sciences college is located.
