Small Colleges in VA

Virginia is home to a wide array of colleges and universities, both public and private. The state has roughly 40 four-year institutions of higher learning, many of which also offer graduate programs of study. Included in this group are a number of highly regarded liberal arts colleges with relatively small student bodies and low student-faculty ratios.
  1. Bridgewater College

    • Founded in 1880 and affiliated with the Church of the Brethren, this college is located in the small town of Bridgewater, near Harrisonburg. As of fall 2009, the co-ed college had an enrollment of roughly 1,500 and a student-faculty ratio of 14 to 1. Bridgewater offers 63 majors and minors.

    Hampden-Sydney College

    • This private men's college, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, was founded in 1775 and had an enrollment of 1,120, as of fall 2009. Located about 60 miles southwest of Richmond, the college enjoys a student-faculty ratio of 11 to 1 and offers baccalaureate degrees in a variety of liberal arts majors, as well as pre-law and pre-med programs.

    Hollins University

    • Founded in 1842, this private women's liberal arts college in Roanoke had a fall 2009 enrollment of 1,036---775 women undergraduates and 261 in co-ed graduate studies. Hollins has a student-faculty ratio of 11 to 1 and offers undergraduate degrees in a variety of liberal arts and sciences majors, the most popular of which are English, creative writing, psychology, business, communication studies and studio art.

    Randolph-Macon College

    • Only 15 miles north of Richmond in the town of Ashland, this private co-ed liberal arts college had a fall 2009 enrollment of 1,250 and a student-faculty ratio of 11 to 1. Founded in 1830 and affiliated with the Methodist Church, the college offers majors in roughly 30 subjects, from accounting and art history to studio art and women's studies.

    Sweet Briar College

    • This small women's college is in central Virginia, about 50 miles south of Charlottesvile. As of fall 2008, it had an enrollment of 813 and a student-faculty ratio of 9 to 1. Founded in 1901, Sweet Briar offers more than 40 major, minor and certificate programs, as well as pre-professional programs in law, medicine and veterinary medicine.

    Washington and Lee University

    • Founded in 1749 this four-year liberal arts college is named in honor of George Washington and Robert E. Lee, who served as its president in the period immediately following the end of the Civil War. The college had a fall 2009 undergraduate enrollment of 1,770 and a student-faculty ratio of 9 to 1. The college's undergraduate degree program offers 39 majors.
