Small Boston Colleges

When many people think about colleges in the Boston, Massachusetts area, they immediately think of the well-known larger schools like Boston University, University of Massachusetts Boston, or Harvard University. However, for students who desire a more personalized college experience, there are also a number of smaller colleges in the Boston metropolitan area, with student enrollments of less than 2,000.
  1. Wheelock College

    • Located a few miles west of downtown Boston, this college enrolls approximately 1,000 students and has a stated mission to work for the improvement of children and families. This mission is reflected in many of the degree programs offered here, such as human development, early childhood education, juvenile justice/youth advocacy, language and literacy, and social work. Also in keeping with its mission, the college requires students to participate in any of a number of community-related efforts as part of their degree fulfillment.

    Fisher College

    • Located in Boston's Back Bay area, this small college began in the early 1900s as a business school, eventually evolving into a degree-conferring college with primarily vocation-focused majors. It enrolls around 1,200 students, offering two-year associates degrees in fields of study that include healthcare, business, fashion, psychology and early childhood education. A few bachelors degrees are also offered, in management, human services, and communication and media.

    Urban College of Boston

    • This two-year school in downtown Boston enrolls under 1,000 students and is geared primarily toward enabling inner-city students to work toward a career. Associates degrees are offered in general studies, human services and early childhood educations; vocational certificate programs include management, personal computer applications, health, nutrition and food safety. The school also partners with Lesley University and UMass to allow graduates to transfer into those schools to complete their bachelors degree.

    Newbury College

    • Located in Brookline minutes from downtown Boston, this college enrolls about 1,000 students and emphasizes career-focused curriculum. Bachelors programs include computer science, graphic design, communications, interior design, marketing, business management and more. Associates degrees are also offered in culinary arts and hotel and restaurant management.

    Mount Ida College

    • Located about eight miles from downtown Boston in the town of Newton, this school blends career-focused majors with a liberal arts foundation, hosting around 1,500 students. Fields of study include biology, criminal justice, child development, business, fashion design, graphic design and veterinary technology. Master's degrees are also offered in management, or in management with an emphasis on interior design. The curriculum often integrates coursework with practical experience in the field.
