The Berklee College of Music is a private college that was founded in 1945. As of 2009, the school had more than 4,000 students working toward Bachelor of Music (BM) degrees and professional diplomas in 12 majors. Available majors include composition, film scoring, music education and performance. Each student must study one principal instrument. The college offers classes in 21 different instruments. The School of Music at Boston University's College of Fine Arts was founded in the 1870s. The school offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in music. Undergraduates can work toward a Bachelor of Music degree in more , or enter a five-year dual degree program leading toward a bachelors degree in performance and a masters degree in music education.
Graduate students can work toward a Master of Music degree in more than 10 different fields, a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in three different fields and a variety of professional diplomas and certificates. The school divides its performance courses into four main divisions, including piano, voice, string and harp and winds, brass and percussion. Boston University tied for 56th in "US News and World Report's" 2010 ranking of national universities.

The music department at Boston College's College of Arts and Sciences was founded in 1989. Music majors work toward a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in music, and study performance, music theory, composition, the history of music and ethnomusicology.
