Irish Music Colleges

While music is often thought of as a hobby, those truly passionate about the art form can manage to make it into a career. Musicians can make money both as teachers and performers, and getting a college education helps them to hone their talents. Ireland is home to several colleges that offer an education in music at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  1. The Royal Irish Academy of Music

    • The Royal Irish Academy of Music, founded in 1848, offers full-time programs in music that include diplomas, bachelor of arts degrees and graduate-level degrees. The diploma in music can be completed in one year, and is designed to prepare graduates for work in the teaching industry or as professional performers. Bachelor's level degree programs allow only a small number of students each year; programs include music performance and composition. Among the graduate degree programs is a doctorate of music in performance that can be completed in four years. Music faculties that can be studied at The Royal Irish Academy of Music include strings, vocal studies and keyboard.

    Trinity College Dublin

    • Trinity College Dublin has offered a liberal education in eastern Ireland since the late 1500s, and degrees in music since 1764. Undergraduate students can specialize in composition, musicology or music technology; all undergraduate programs begin with basic courses in music and build each year toward the student's chosen specialization. The college's master in philosophy in musicology and music theory can be completed in one calendar year and emphasizes areas that include contemporary music theory, research methodologies and Schenkerian Theory. Performance is not a required aspect of music degree programs at Trinity College Dublin, but students may choose to incorporate a recital as 10 percent of their degree.
