Colleges for Music Recording in Pennsylvania

Most music buffs know that "Thriller" and "Hotel California" are among the top 100 albums of all time. But those who are more serious about recorded music may want to consider a career in the industry. In Pennsylvania, there are seven colleges that grant music recording degrees. Several more, such as Drexel University, offer degrees in the music industry.
  1. Community College of Philadelphia

    • College music recording programs lead graduates to entry-level positions as audio engineers, recording technicians, sound mixers, artist agents, concert managers and more. Graduates may find employment in live or studio venues.

      The Community College of Philadelphia offers an A.A.S. of sound recording and music technology. Students are trained to use "industry standard equipment and software." In addition to the general education requirements, courses required in this major include piano, harmony, accounting, digital audio editing and musical acoustics.To graduate, a student must complete 67 credits, including a music internship. The main campus is located on Spring Garden Street, in central Philadelphia. (See Reference 1)

    Harrisonburg Area Community College (HACC)

    • Located in Central Pennsylvania, HACC offers both a diploma in music technology and marketing and an associates in music industry. To receive a diploma, students earn 20 credits and enroll in classes including music business and the Internet , audio technology and two free electives. Career choices are more limited since most students are limited to employment as technicians. Students in the two-year program learn to deal with professionals from the business and music worlds. While the program offers a variety of interesting classes, it is also geared more toward careers in merchandising and music promotion.

      HACC was established in1964. Offering approximately 200 programs, the college is committed to student success and high academic standards. It also offers the lowest tuition in the area. (See Reference 2)

    Lebanon Valley College (LVC)

    • According to the Lebanon Valley College website, the four-year "curriculum combines three primary areas of study: general education, music, and recording technology." In addition to mastering audio engineering, students learn to design audio systems. Applicants must pass a "performance and ear training audition." "U.S. News & World Report" ranked LVC eighth overall among the 71 comparable institutions in its regional category.

    Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC)

    • The A.A. of music and studio production offers students an opportunity to "record, produce, edit, mix, and master audio using industry-standard equipment and software." Graduates also gain effective communication skills, computer literacy and enroll in a media scriptwriting course. The institution enrolls just over 8,000 students into many different programs, including music and studio production.
