Colleges for Music History

Many private and state colleges in the U.S offer courses in music history. Music history is an important part of the undergraduate curriculum and all music degrees require at least some courses in western and non-western music history. In most of the top U.S history schools, a degree in music history is only offered at a graduate level, particularly a Ph.D.
  1. Harvard

    • The Harvard Department of Music offers an undergraduate and graduate degrees in historical musicology as well as composition, theory and ethnomusicology. The musicology department is divided into two groups of study: historical musicology which includes history, theory, and literature of Western music, or ethnomusicology which includes the cultural study of music. Graduate degrees at Harvard in music are only offered at the Ph.D level and not the master's level. The requirements for admission into the Harvard Ph.D program include fluency in German, French or Italian.

    Princeton

    • The department of music at Princeton University offers music degrees in musicology, which includes music history, musical theory and composition. Like Harvard University, Princeton University offers a degree in musicology only at the Ph.D level. Because there is no formal curriculum for musicology of music history at Princeton, students must consult with a graduate adviser on how to choose their courses.

    Berkeley

    • At the University of Berkeley, in California, the study of music history is closely linked to their musicology department. Graduate degrees in music history are offered at both the master's and Ph.D level. Before beginning a Ph.D dissertation, graduate students start by taking three introduction seminars in musical scholarship and ethnomusicology. During the second semester, graduate students must take research seminars which are devoted to different periods in western music history.

    UCLA

    • The University of Los Angeles, California, UCLA, offers degrees in music history at four separate levels. The music history department is one of the three music departments which make up the Herb Alpert school of music. Unlike many private schools, UCLA offers a bachelor's and minor in music history. Both a doctorate and master's degree are offered at the graduate level. The graduate program in musicology at UCLA was ranked #1 by the National Research Council in 2010.
