Colleges for Music Composition

The study of music composition can take many different shapes, and for almost every shape is a college with a program to match it. Each program has something different to offer then the next, so it's important to have an idea of what kind of education is being sought and what kind of composition instruction is desired.

    Berklee College of Music

    • The Professional Writing Department at Berklee College of Music is unique because it offers two composition majors: traditional and contemporary composition or jazz composition. The Composition Department deals with tonal and non-tonal music, orchestration, writing techniques, score preparation and advanced training in orchestral conducting. The Jazz Composition Department focuses solely on the jazz idiom, paying attention to melody, counterpoint, form, arranging, and orchestration. Much focus is placed on developing musicians' own style.
