Colleges for a Music Producer

Music producers engineer sounds, procure studios for their artists and offer artists feedback to ensure a quality song. Starting a career in music production without a degree is possible, but having a degree gives prospective music producers an edge on production techniques and working the business side of music. Having studied business, science or music will help students when pursuing a music production degree.
  1. Berklee College of Music

    • Located in Boston, Berklee College of Music is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The school offers a degree in music production and engineering. Students in the program will take courses in ear training, audio technology and acoustics. The school admits students based on academic aptitude, musical talent and prior musical experience. Students will complete 120 credits for the degree, 30 of which will be in music production.

    New York University

    • Accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, New York University offers both a Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Music degree in music technology. The school concentrates on teaching students about sound engineering and post production. Students are required to complete 128 credit hours for the bachelor's degree program and 45 for the master's. Classes at the school include aural comprehension, recording technology and musical acoustics. The school also offers an accelerated bachelor's and master's degree program for undergraduates that will allow students to complete both degrees in five years. Students must apply for this program when they are in their sophomore or junior year.

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis

    • Accredited by the North Central Higher Learning Commission, Purdue University at Indianapolis offers a Master of Science degree in music technology. The program focuses on teaching students how to use current music technology programs to prepare students for a career in music production. Students will complete 30 credit hours of coursework and will complete courses in the foundations of music production, music technology methods and web design for musicians, among others. Students wishing to apply to the program must submit all undergraduate transcripts and transcripts from any school where the student has completed graduate work. Students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average to stay in the program.

    Ball State University

    • Located in Muncie, Indiana, Ball State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The school offers a Bachelor of Science degree in music media production and requires students to complete 84 credit hours of coursework. Students will complete classes in recording technology, sight and ear training and songwriting, among others. Students wishing to pursue a degree in music and media production must be admitted to the school of music after being accepted into Ball State University.
