Located in Northern California, Foothill College has an Associate’s degree program in Music Technology. Students learn the ins and outs of Pro Tools, other music technology equipment and how the music business works. Foothill prides itself on being open to all music genres, and students can tailor the program to fit their needs. Foothill’s wide array of courses include: introduction to digital audio, recording studio basics, entertainment law & new media, mixing & mastering with Pro Tools and much more. Graduates have left Foothill and then gone on to work with such artists and companies as Neil Young, R.E.M. and the Universal Music Group.

The Musicians Institute, located in Hollywood, offers an Audio Engineering program that prepares students for a career in music production. Its location in Hollywood puts you right in the heart of the recording industry, and students are able to take advantage of many internship opportunities at top-notch recording studios. The Musicians Institute offer three certificate programs (General Audio Engineering, Post-Production Audio and Live Sound Production), as well as two degree emphasis options (a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance, with a minor in Audio Production or an Associate’s degree that combines 60 units of music performance and 30 units of audio engineering.) Students get to enjoy small class sizes with topics such as: mixing & mastering, pre-production, post-production essentials, music editing and more.

The California College of Music offers a certification program in engineering and music production. Located in Pasadena, the program provides the instruction necessary for students to excel in the recording industry of the 21st century. Students get hands-on experience in both digital and analog recording techniques, as well as other areas that will prepare them for all facets of music production. Students get to work with the school’s highly-skilled faculty, which includes multiple Grammy award winners.
