Music Production & Performance Colleges

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of both broadcast and sound engineers (music producers) and musicians is expected to stay steady through the year 2018, growing 8 percent from 2008 to 2018. Although some recording stars do not have formal training, students pursue higher education in music performance and production to hone their skills, learn new technology and techniques and build industry connections. Across the country, schools offer a variety of programs to prepare for a career in music.
  1. Berklee College of Music

    • Musicians will find a variety of subject majors to choose from at the Berklee College of Music. Berklee offers majors in music production and engineering, performance, music therapy, professional music, songwriting, music management and film scoring. Students in the four-year bachelor's program take courses in areas like vocal conducting for music education majors, post-bebop harmonic innovations, Jimi Hendrix lab, introduction to timpani, women in rock music, taxation in the music business, the psychiatric setting and directed study in songwriting.

Class sizes average 11 students. All applicants must have a live interview and audition (most are held in Boston, but Berklee does audition students all over the world). Financial aid through loans, grants and scholarships is available. While on campus, students may want to participate in one of the Berkelee cafeteria's night performances, work on the music business journal or magazine, join the student government or play an intramural sport such as ice hockey.
