Music Career Colleges

Those interested in a music career have many options. Schools throughout the U.S. cater to the musical interests of burgeoning artists. Although the thought of a music college may evoke images of classical music or sacred songs, music colleges also offer jazz, contemporary and world music programs.
  1. Berkelee College of Music

    • For students interested in a career in jazz or contemporary music, Berklee offers a variety of learning opportunities in the United States and abroad. Berklee offers bachelor's degrees in areas such as music performance, as well as a Masters of Business Administration in conjunction with Suffolk University. Additionally, the school has partnered with other institutions around the world that allow it to further important goals such as cultural learning opportunities for students and to promote the effectiveness of contemporary music education.

    Eastman School of Music

    • Located in Rochester, N.Y., and associated with the University of Rochester, the Eastman School offers majors for those interested in careers in jazz or classical music. Bachelor's degrees are available in world music, jazz studies and applied music (performance). Students also may pursue graduate degrees in composition, musical education and ethnomusicology, among other majors. For students interested in a career with an orchestra, the school offers an orchestral studies diploma in a partnership with the Rochester Philharmonic.

    Oberlin Conservatory

    • Associated with Oberlin College in Ohio, Oberlin Conservatory is a school that offers degrees for those interested in jazz and classical music. Students can earn Bachelors of Music degrees in performance, which may include voice, percussion, organ, piano, early instruments or other instruments. Students can also earn a Masters in conducting, opera theatre or historical performance. You can also get a diploma in performance.

      One famous almnus is opera mezzo-soprano Denise Graves.
